Ska-ttered All Over The World: The Thriving Ska Movement in the Philippines

Somewhere on the other side of the Pacific Ocean lies a tropical archipelago consisting of more than 7000 islands and a wide variety of cultures and languages: the Philippines. Despite their music being dominated by sappy ballads, shameless renditions of popular songs, and pop groups with rock band instruments, there is a bustling underground scene where people jive to sweet and brassy horns and cool…See More

About Me:
I really started listening to SKA during high school when I was introduced to a not yet well-known band from my hometown called Less Than Jake. I soon became a regular at LTJ shows and befriended others who were at the deeper ends of the local scene. Soon I was going to ska and punk shows two to three times a week with bands like the Usuals, Baker Act, Skif Dank, Sleepy Odie, and whatever bands came through town. I also started discovering bands across the country (and world) from getting every ska comp I could get my hands on and copying friends cds and vinyls to a ancient recording format known as the cassette tape! During college (University of Florida - Fine Arts: Electronic Intermedia), I was jamming out to bands like Buck-O-Nine, The Suicide Machines, Against All Authority, Slapstick, the Specials, and the Skatalites. I went to local shows, fests, the Warped Tour, wherever I could go to get my ska fix. It also helped that there was this cool new thing called the internet that allowed me to find mp3s and better yet, a service called Napster that let me download anything and everything I wanted... of course we all know what came of that! In the midst of this, I met a girl who would later turn out to be my wife. We both graduated and moved to Southwest Florida and became teachers (I teach middle school graphic arts). Five years later, as a side project, I decided to start podcasting and create a "SKA" MySpace profile as a way to stay connected with SKA since my town has a very lacking scene. I also started creating some ska inspired designs for tshirts, mugs, etc. With the success I had from all of this, I decided to take it all a step further and create a ska web portal (skaspot.com) and a ska social network (this one) with the help of Ning.com. Through it all, these last few years, I've discovered some incredible bands, met some awesome people, and my love for the music grows stronger.

SKAspot.com is a ska-centered social network that uses the Ning platform. With 3000 registered members, content on the website is created and curated by ska fans, bands and promoters and is the largest ska music specific social network on the web.  Unfortunately, keeping this site up and running for free for its users costs money and to support such a large network, SKAspot.com currently uses Ning’s “Plus” plan. In July, we’ll need to pay the bills again and we’re looking…

Hello SKA Summit!

I recently started on a new project to get a SKA Channel on SKY.fm internet radio. You may have heard of it if you're friend with me on FB (and might be sick of all my postings). So far I have over 100 hours of playlist of over 2000 tracks of assorted…

SKAspot Has a Turntable.fm Room (US Only)

Posted on July 18, 2011 at 8:00pm 0 Comments

Have you checked out Turntable.fm yet? If not (and if you live in the US), you should give it a whirl. I opened a SKAspot Room on Turntable.fm. If you're unfamiliar with the site, it's like Pandora or last.fm for a group experience. Up to 5 "djs" can spin music they upload or buy. Listeners and djs can vote music "awesome" or "lame" and chat in real time. Unfortunately it is currently only available in…

OI! How's it going, I'm having issues with the mobile version of the site. Every time the page is refreshed the mobile version pops up, I've tried to click the full site button but it isn't working. I'm guessing these issues might be specific to me. I would like to browse the site and become an active member but the mobile version is a inconvenience for me, is there any way I would be able to opt out of the mobile version?
I am still looking for an other option in case that is something that can not be done.
Thank you for your time.
