So I have been touring now with a hardcore/ska band for about 4 months. The skacore scene out there is smaller than the hardcore, punk, and ska scene, so shows are typically filled with a skacore band + ska bands, or a skacore band + punk bands. It seems like people are either embracing the genre with enthuisiasm, or completely loathing it because it is not 3rd wave enough.

Collectively the members on this forum have mixed tastes, wondering how you all look at this genre.

I LOVE IT!!! It doesnt have to be all 3rd wave RUDE boy rythym, thats why its skaCORE, for the hardcore side that tells you its got some hardcore punk in it too
and yeah I was reading the replies, and might bostones is different from like left alone and viernes 13. I LOVE all 3 bands, but they are all a different kind of skacore. Either way I think skacore does deserve its own subgenre, cuz its not SKA ska, but its not hardcore PUNK, its just ska-core
it denpends if its played right. some bands that i have heard say they were skacore, but had mainly a hardcore sound. which is kinda cool. but i'd like to hear more of the SKA than drop D guitars.
Ska core kept me interested in ska in general i still love 2 tone and Trad ska but ska core is more fun for me. Ska core is progression of the genre which is why I like it so much. I love skank and spinkick to the same song but thats just me lol. Ska core bands need to play more ska though the ska core bands in the local South East scene have been playing less and less ska and more breakdowns which kinda sux.
the Best Skacore band ever is the Flaming Tsunamis from new haven, ct, they were realy big in both the ska scene and Ct's huge hXc scene, if you really are into skacore check them out at there last show the had over 500 people at the American Legion in Wallingford, Ct, They were also known around the country in the hXc and ska scenes, thank god I got to see them twice before there breakup last year
Yeah, some of my favorite shows have been Flaming Tsunamis shows. The guys are great and are good friends of ours. Andy through an amazing show at the American Legion for the Community Records bands, and the New Jersey show was amazing back in July.

i dig it, i can't stand most 3rd wave though. especially the really poppy crap uck! 2nd was was good and i am definetlly a sucker for real ska. music is an expression of how you feel, and if it feels like thats what you're doing its cool. but you can really feel when its just cranked out without any passion and that is just all too common in every genre of music these days.....
Im not here to please anyone, ska-core clearly destroys the real ska, ska-core must find a new name without the word ska in it. Maybe girly melodic hardcore with horns on which the guitars eventually resemble circus music
I couldn't agree with you more...I could see if there was more ska, but c'mon kids, most of this shit just sounds absolutely ridiculous...Some of this stuff coming out of the bands now, it's hard to even take them seriously...Give me that ska from back in the day, give it to me, we want the real ska! And I DEFINITELY don't feel that skacore is the future of the genre... I think it would be more of a 2-tone revival if anything...mostly because it's more likely to get outsiders to listen. 2-tone, and 1st wave, and even shit, serious non-poppy 3rd Wave (the Toasters, Bim Skala Bim, etc.) is more likely to attract outsiders, because they use horns and keys as a melody making instrumenst. They use horns and keyboards to form layers of melody that only serious musicians and music appreciaters can see. People who love all music will always love the early forms of ska, when it was still respectable. All these skacore bands don't even have remnance of ska left in them, and they use horns and keys as novelty to attract suckers who think this is "the next big thing" to just another shitty hardcore band...and don't get me wrong, I don't mind skacore...just in it's early stages...when there was still ska left, and it wasn't mixed with this stupid shitty emo hardcore shit like it is today...so just overall, my opinion of the future of the genre = bands like Royal City Riot, Green Room Rockers and the Pinstripes...NOT The Flaming Tsunamis, or any other bullshit like them...

Ska is s broad genre (3rd wave, 2 tone, dub), and trust me, the hate that is thrown at skacore bands makes them wish that there was a new name for the genre. Booking new skacore can be so difficult.

Dub is not a sub-genre of Ska...it's related, like reggae is, but it's not a sub-genre...

and trust me, I'm not bashing all ska-core...I LOVE the Bosstones, The Blue Meanies, the Suicide Machines, Bomb The Music Industry (I guess they're skacore), etc etc...there are some bands I do like...but most of Ska-core has seriously let me down...especially as of lately...and trust me, I DID give it a shot...I'm going to use this example again...the Mass-ska-raid in Atlanta that I went to had 16 bands...most of them were "ska-core" and I LITERALLY laughed at all mostly of them. There were MAYBE 3 or 4 good bands at best...prime example: Paranoia Dance Party. I'll tell you exactly what this "ska-core" band did...they had a front man, that did nothing but screamo type singing, and danced around like a moron with a tambourine... played absolutely random notes on a synthiser and a couple random horns that didn't even match the songs, over what was mostly hardcore music, with maybe 1 or 2 seconds of face paced Streetlight Manifesto-eske skapunk riffs...it was really an insult to the genre to even call them "ska"....if you don't believe me, watch this...is this really even ska anymore? It's fucking terrible music if you ask me...

Yeah. I know them pretty well. Well, its good that you went to that show. They are more skacore bands out there that attempt to do something a little bit more than that. Lots on Open Hand & Community Records.
