I strolled through all the pages of the forum looking for a thread like this (we need some sort of form of organization), but since there isn't, I figured I might as well start one.

Find a new ska band you like? An old one that we've never heard of? Post 'em!

The main reason I started this is because I found a really awesome new band, a three-piece dub-punk-ska ensemble from Coventry (the home of 2-Tone) called The Ripps. They're not straight-up ska (they're sort of rock-ish like the Dead 60s, but not), but they're really good. Check out 'A 1000 Miles Away From Home'.

Interesting...I see a lot of LTJ influence in their music. Is this common in Michigan?

I like We Are The Union; aside from a few (somewhat forced) riffs here and there, there's not a lot of 'ska' influence, which is okay, since their pop-punk-with-horns routine works very well. I've always thought brass was a teriffic compliment to rock, punk, and pop-punk...I'd like to see more bands like this form and become popular and bring an end to the old "horns = ska" standard.
Yeah Less Than Jake influences alot of people in michigan.
Their first E.P. was more ska, but they've kinda gone away from that.
Also, the Fad is a really great band from long Island. Not a ton of ska there, but still some.

There's a band called Secret Agent 8 from the Houston area that is really good. Very unique. They aren't around anymore but they were great.
Hey it depends what you are into? I mean i am from the UK and there are so many underground ska bands here. I mean not all directly ska, but have some ska base to them. such as The Kirkz from Macclesfield, which are alright but only one song is remotely ska. Taking Chase from Edinburgh are like motion city soundtrack crossed with emo and ska, bit different.

But Ska-rap you have fulibulbus from leeds, pretty good live, although recodings are not that amazing. Sonic Boom Six being the main one to look at ther, think from Wales somewhere. Another to try is Sence of Urgency from Stoke-On-Trent, they are pretty amazing.

When Toasters canme to England they heard a band called Three Minute Warning donning from Wales, which is two-tone ska style.

The Big, from Essex are reggae beat ska. Pretty good if you like that style. From Wigan there is Accoustic style ska from John Player Specials.

Rock-ska you have Mr Shiraz from Huddersfield who are apparently on Warped Tour Next Year. And Bradford band Catch It Kebabs that are party-ska who just did a 9 counties in a day set of gigs.

To be honest there are a lot of bands in the UK, i havent put them all, but there are a few to check out. Try Mr Shiraz if yuo are off to the Warped Tour so you get a taste. me x
I just thought as well Chester band Laffin are good to listen to if you like SKa-Ha, a Happy laughing type of Ska. me x
UK bands?

Amphetameanies are stil my favourite current band, The Riffs have finally put out a stormer of a live album, Smoke Like A Fish from South Wales are excellent too. In a slightly more downbeat style I'd recommend Rebelation.
Too Many Crooks seem to still be knocking about, and Zen Baseball Bat from (I think) Merseyside are worth a listen though I'm not sure if they're still around :(
There's a fairly new band from Yorkshire called Barmy Surplus who should be releasing an album soon to follow up their single 'Born Again Bootboy' which is vaguelly reminiscent of people like Arthur Kays Originals. I think the single has been deleted butI'm not positive on that.
I've recently picked up an album by The Busdrivers (Missed This Little Trend) from somewhere in the US... when its good its excellent but some of the tracks are a bit hit and miss.
Other than that I can listen to The Aggrolites all night, they deserve some success IMHO

BTW Catch-it Kebabs failed in their attempt didn't they? Thought they only made seven gigs in a day. Not bad going though! Too much of a swing-core band for my tastes though.
Im not sure on the final outcome, i know i just saw that show in Manchester, first of the day. kinda havent kept up with the loop on that one.

but yeah you mention a few i havent heard of but Zen Baseball Bat hear their sond about aldi and anfiled, i love it, hope they havent split up i fancy seeing them. me x
in South Carolina, we got: The Bottle Cap Bandits from Myrtle Beach....very talented young band....saw them with the Slackers http://www.myspace.com/thebottlecapbandits
and Eddies Cookouts are Dangerous are ok....they don't have a good recording, and I've never seen them....so I don't know how they are....The Indepents are awesome...http://www.myspace.com/theindependents
but my favorite are a now defunct band called Maladroit...I've seen them a good half a dozen times... http://www.myspace.com/themaladroit ....
and of course Dawn of the Dude....who's new record isn't exactly ska.... they're still an awesome band http://www.myspace.com/dawnofthedude
and those are a couple of local-ish bands that are awesome in my book....
Yay! Isolated Victims are my ska friends from the ghetto!

I just stumbled upon a band called RokkaTone, from Texas. They've been around a bit, but they're new to me, and I think they're pretty interesting.

They play acoustic ska and rock steady ...along with other Jamaican and American roots music (mento, calypso, folk, blues, etc.), and use instruments you'd find in a Jamaican street band: steel drum, melodica, acoustic guitar, upright bass, trombone, hand percussion, and a sparse drum set that includes three soup cans strapped to the piccolo snare drum.

CHECK 'EM OUT.
